Alternate Paths to Certification

If you hold relevant financial or other professional qualifications, you may be eligible to pursue a faster, alternate path to CFP® certification and FPSC Level 1® certification.

Important Changes: Alternate Paths to Certification – Effective January 1, 2020

FP Canada will be making changes to its certification programs. Effective January 1, 2020, FP Canada will introduce paths to QAFP™ certification several paths to CFP certification including specific paths for: CFP certificants from other jurisdictions, Pl. Fin. designation holders and others.

Alternate Paths to Certification in Effect until December 31, 2019

Candidates writing the FPSC Level 1 Exam or CFP Exam in either the June 2019 or November 2019 may still qualify through the Relevant Financial Planning Qualifications or Other Relevant Professional Qualifications fast track options. See the table below for fast-track options applicable in 2019.

You may be exempt from an FP Canada-Approved Core Curriculum Program and the FPSC Level 1 Examination in Financial Planning and may be eligible to proceed directly to an FP Canada-Approved Capstone Course. You may also be eligible to apply directly to become an FPSC Level 1 Certificant in Financial Planning.

Fellow of the FCIA
LL.B./J.D.
You may be exempt from an FPSC-Approved Core Curriculum education program and may apply to proceed directly to the FPSC Level 1 Examination.

And if you have a minimum of five years of qualifying financial planning work experience, you may be eligible to proceed directly to an FPSC-Approved Capstone Course.
CLUYou may be exempt from an FPSC-Approved Core Curriculum education program and may apply to proceed directly to the FPSC Level 1 Examination in Financial Planning. CFP Certification from FPSB Member Territory
You may be exempt from the required: FP Canada-Approved Core Curriculum Program; FPSC Level 1 Examination; and FP Canada-Approved Capstone Course, and may apply to proceed directly to the CFP Examination. You may also be eligible to apply directly to become an FPSC Level 1 Certificant in Financial Planning.

How to Apply for an Alternate Path Option – In Effect Until December 31, 2019

Please complete the FP Canada Exemption Application Form and email your form to info@fpcanada.ca together with all required supporting documentation. You may also fax your completed form together with all required supporting documentation to 416-593-7412. Applications take 1-2 business days to process. You will receive email notifications regarding the status of your application.
