Desmond Nwaerondu
2025 Recipient of the FP Canada Emerging Leader Award

Desmond Nwaerondu is a financial planner at Sun Life Financial. An advisor with over 19 years of experience, he previously served as a senior banking officer and financial planner at Scotiabank. He’s a graduate of the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), where he served as Chair of the Financial Services Program Committee and continues to mentor students who are graduating from business degree or diploma programs.

At Sun Life, Desmond has served on the Digital Advisory Sub-Committee and helped develop a robust social media strategy. He’s also dedicated to giving back to his community through volunteerism. Notably, he is a director on the board of Kids Up Front Calgary, an organization that strengthens communities by connecting children and their families to enriching experiences.

Desmond is the founder of Des Fights Cancer, a fundraiser for those who have been diagnosed with cancer and need financial assistance. He’s also served as a co-lead for projects with Habitat for Humanity, and as an FP Canada™ exam writer and scorer, among other volunteer positions.
